SPEAKERS

Dr. Heli Säre DVM, PhD, RCVS CertVA                                   

Heli has 20 years of work experience in the field of veterinary anaesthesia and intensive care. She completed the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia Senior Clinical Training in the Veterinary Universities in London, Dublin and Vienna. She obtained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia. In Vienna Veterinary University and obtained her PhD in 2012. Returning to home town 2012 Tartu, she was associate professor in anaesthesia and intensive care in Estonian University of Life Sciences. 2014 Heli founded a clinic chain in Estonia and worked as a clinical manager for 4 years.                         Dr. Säre has given several lectures and organised workshops on the topic of veterinary anaesthesia, analgesia, intensive care and published articles nationally and internationally.

Dr. Marcel Aumann DrMedVet, DipACVECC, DipACVIM, DipECVECC             

 Dr. Marcel Aumann is a Diplomate of the American and European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, as well as the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He has worked for 10 years as a specialist in a private referral practice in the United States before becoming Director of the Emergency and Critical Care Service, at the National Veterinary School in Toulouse, France, in 2010. Dr. Aumann has extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate level. Dr. Aumann has taught continuing education seminars, practical case discussions and wet labs on a variety of topics related to small animal emergency and critical care nationally and internationally for many years.

PROGRAMME

09:30-10:00   Registration and coffee

10:00-11:30   Acute abdomen - a case- based discussion. The lecture will discuss patient management (clinical management of acute abdomen), including initial stabilisation, evaluation (e.g. abdominal FAST ultrasound, abdominal fluid analysis) and treatment for different etiologies of acute abdomen.

11:30-11:45   Short break

11:45-12:45   Analgesia for the critical patient. Many critically ill patients experience pain due to underlying illness or injury, a recent surgical or other invasive procedure, or noxious stimuli caused by interventions in the intensive care unit. We review the assessment, and treatment of pain in the critical care setting, use of sedative- analgesic medications to alleviate distress in critically ill patients.

12:45-13:45  Lunch is provided

13:45-15:15  Respiratory distress - important aspects of practical patient management (Management of respiratory distress) The lecture will present key points for the management of patients in respiratory distress, including initial stabilisation, modalities of oxygen therapy and emergency procedures (e.g. thoracic FAST ultrasound, thoracocentesis, chest tube placement, tracheostomy tube placement).

15:15-16:15  What next? We are looking the logic behind our everyday decisions in diagnosing and care. How and Why we are deciding in certain way? What are the common supporting information sources and tools? How does this work in so time-critical environment as veterinary medicine?
